James S. Nagel, M.D. I am the founder and program director of Quality Of Life Medicine. I was trained and board certified in Internal Medicine. It was my good fortune to be trained in the revolutionary fields of Anti-Aging, Regenerative, and Functional Medicine. I also hold certificates in Integrative Cancer Therapies, and Peptide Therapies through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.
It was my esteemed privilege to graduate from Loma Linda University in 1989, after which I completed a residency program in Internal Medicine at Kettering Memorial Medical Center. I completed training as a Flight Surgeon through the School of Aerospace Medicine during my stent in the United States Air Force. Prior to entering medical school, I was the chief medical technologist for Lincoln Hospital in East Los Angeles.
It has always been my vision to provide patients with the highest quality healthcare available. I founded Quality of Life Medicine for Health and Wellness in Chico California in order to more fully incorporate into my practice the ideals and principles of Lifestyle and Preventative Medicine.
Taking a “proactive” (not “reactive”) approach to medicine, I partner with my patients as we address the question, what can we do with respect to lifestyle and other technologies to prevent disease from occurring in the first place?
In medical school and residency, I was fascinated by endocrinology. In fact, my Internal Medicine program director at Kettering Memorial Medical Center was an endocrinologist. Even at that very early stage in my training I was curious as to why no effort had been made to replicate normal female biology when replacing estrogen.
About 20 years ago my practice began to slowly evolve into a paradigm that focused on health creation rather than disease management. I’ve had the privilege of integrating into my Quality Of Life Medicine practice the principles of Functional, Anti-Aging, Regenerative, and Life-Style Medicine. This transformation in the medical paradigm of my practice was strongly influenced by mentors such as Drs. Pamela Smith, Neil Rouzier, Ron Rothenberg, Terry Herzog, Diane Schwartzbein, Sherman Nagel, Lawrence Longo, and many others including T. S. Wiley.
Many of my mentors had their own unique approach to hormone replacement therapy. Being a novice in hormone therapies some 20 years ago, I tried all of the different approaches. Through careful clinical field research involving thousands of patients, I eventually learned what worked and what did not work. My clinical knowledge continues to evolve. After years of field research in the empiric approach to true physiologic hormone replacement therapy, the principles behind the Panacea Protocol were incubated.
Whether a rational explanation for present-day hormone replacement therapy can be found or not, it seems likely that in women there is an optimum balance of hormones which makes for well-being. It is called “The Hormone Sweet Spot.” Right now, the Standard Of Care is avoid the use of hormones. If for some reason one is compelled to use HRT, then do so at the lowest dose for the shortest duration of time. That approach makes absolutely no rational scientific sense, especially given the state of the art of our current knowledge. The only approach that works and makes any sense is true physiological estrogen replacement for as long as he or she chooses.
Now, 35-years after making those curious observations, there has been no improvement in the approach. There is no effort made to administer estrogen therapy accurately and precisely. It seems that the goal of treatment is to ameliorate a handful of symptoms, but not to fully restore a woman’s femininity or health. Decades of research and clinical data substantiate the fact that when estrogen is accurately restore back to optimal levels, it can prevent and or reverse the vast majority of chronic health problems that women experience. This approach should be of special interest to the internist, family practitioner, rheumatologist, psychiatrist, gerontologist, cardiologist and orthopedist.
After well over a century of awareness that ovarian function plays a central role in the health of women, physiologic estrogen restoration is still not the standard of care. Physician skepticism and corporate intransigence in the medical and pharmaceutical industries, emerge as an insurmountable obstacle to women gaining routine access to the therapies they critically need. It would appear that promoting the health of women is antithetical to the corporate interests of the health industry. There is no profit in promoting health, whereas there is profit in disease management.
Dr. Rebecca Provorse grew up in rural northern California and spent her adolescence wandering the hills, vineyards and orchards of Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Her innate love of the natural world became woven into her wonder of science and medicine. She was pre-med at UC Berkeley in California and completed her bachelor's of science from the University of Oregon. In 2004 she graduated from the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) with a doctorate in naturopathy (ND) and a masters in Oriental Medicine (MSOM). She has taught at the graduate level, spoken at numerous professional events and published herbal monographs for supplement companies.
For over 15 years, Dr. Provorse has been in private practice specializing in endocrinology (hormone-related disorders). She was the first rhythmic dosing practitioner in Oregon, blazing trails in this state using circannual rhythmic replacement. She continues to offer this revolutionary hormone therapy (as well as static HRT options) to cis- and transgender adults in her practice for optimal wellness. Many endocrine disorders have an autoimmune component, so Dr. Provorse has become well-versed in many of those conditions: especially Hashimoto's and Grave's disease. Dr. Provorse is a member of the endoANP (endocrinology association of naturopathic physicians).
